Skin Health by Mike Reid
Naturopath ND, MSc Acupuncture
The skin is the largest organ of the body and often a good indication or reflection of our overall health.
Treatments for common skin complaints such as eczema, psoriasis, acne and rosacea often include a closer look at what’s going on inside the body, especially the underlying causes of the inflammation.
We need to look at primary triggers (what caused the initial onset of the skin condition) and also secondary triggers which are unique to the individual (what continues to exacerbate the primary trigger).
These two factors combined are often overlooked in many treatment protocols.
Initiating those primary triggers are often injury or trauma to the skin, allergies, stress, medications/drugs and environmental pollution (including cosmetics, household cleaning products, vehicle exhaust, industry emission and cigarette smoke).
The secondary triggers, putting petrol on the fire, will keep the condition active and may result in re-occurring flare-ups. In practice I will always address:
- digestive function
- liver health
- hormone imbalances
- overexposure to sunlight
- high/low humidity
Have you ever been recommended multiple creams that were indicated for both eczema and psoriasis, however, they didn’t work for you?
The reason is that even though these two conditions have similarities, they both present with marked differences in inflammation and sensitivity which require different topical and supplementary treatment approaches.
In practice I will always treat by skin presentation.
Whether the skin is red, purple, white or brown. If the texture is raised or flat. Is the skin hot or cold to touch. What is the texture of the skin - dry, moist, rough, smooth or bumpy.
These clues lead to an understanding of the underlying triggers.
My Naturopathic approach is to look for all of the triggers that have led to the skin condition, and what has kept it being persistent and why it may have spread to other parts of the body.
In a recent case study I had a client presenting with psoriasis of a hot, red, itchy and raised nature. They had been recommended turmeric/curcumin (a popular anti-inflammatory herb) which seemed to have made the condition worse.
In this situation the herb, considered “hot”, was not indicated for this condition.
I switched the herbs to more cooling in nature, included a suitable cream, and the condition started to rapidly resolve.
For all of my clients I customise my treatments and recommendations to suit your individual needs and health conditions.
For skin conditions I will usually prescribe; supplements which address both the primary and secondary triggers alongside individualised dietary and lifestyle advice.
Topical creams customised to suit your condition, skin sensitivity and body site.
Providing you with dietary guidelines which will lead to significant relief from your dietary triggers.
I am able to treat you with the following conditions:
- Fungal Infection
- Herpes Simplex Virus
- Nail Infections
- Papilloma Virus (Warts)
- Parapsoriasis En Plaques
- Pigmentated Skin
- Psoriatic Arthritis
- Urticaria (Hives)
I look forward to helping you resolve any skin complaint you have been struggling with.
